Autumn in New York

There's a reason there's so many songs written about it. Fall in New York is indescribable. I already knew New York was my favorite city, but this time around being there during October really made me fall in love (no pun intended ;)) I'm not sure if it's the incredible food and coffee, the briskness in the air, the orange and yellow leaves, football and baseball on TV, or a combination of all of these things, but New York is absolutely amazing in Autumn. When we took the photos in this post I had literally walked all over the city- roughly 10 miles- exploring different burroughs by foot. While downtown Soho/ Tribeca/ Nolita area is my favorite, we ended our day in Central Park after walking up the High Line (definitely something all visitors to NYC should do!). Us Southern Californians have a shortage of leaves changing color and it was worth the trip up town to see.  By the end of the day I was physically exhausted but mentally exhilarated, an affect that this city just always seems to have on you. Actually, I am so stricken and in love with New York that I plan to move there within the next year, so that's something I'm really looking forward to!

As for what I'm wearing in this post, when I was preparing myself for a day turned to night in New York, layers were the answer. It was pretty mild during the day but got cool at night. I had flat boots on to walk the city but changed into the heeled Sam Edelman ones you see here to meet friends for drinks that evening. It's the kind of thing that's very Uptown meets Downtown depending on the shoe you have on and maybe the amount of eyeliner, ha. Also, this cape/poncho/whateveryouwanttocallit- it's from last Fall, but such a classic and I'm still seeing them all over for this year's shopping. I love feeling like I can wear pieces like this year after year and still be fashion forward and put together. It's a great feeling when you don't have to throw away a favorite from last year, isn't it? I'm putting some similar ones in the shop gallery below if any of you are looking for something similar to purchase now. I'd highly recommend a piece like this especially in a tartan or plaid which is so timeless and classic.

What are some of your places to go and shop in New York? I would love to hear for next time I'm in the Big Apple.  I could go on and on about New York's fashion and my favorite places there,  but I'll save that until I actually make the move from West Coast to East- stay tuned ;)

Runner's High

Lately I've been crazy busy trying to juggle lots of different projects, which isn't exactly ideal when it also comes to making time for exercise. Accordingly, I've decided to make it a point to get healthy and toned again. I've always been a runner. I ran track at Palo Alto High School (go Vikings) and have kept up with it in my adult life by occasionally participating in runs like the Santa Monica Classic 10k.  Something I've always struggled with is cute workout gear. Seriously until a few months ago you could have seen me in my gym shorts from High School track practice with a hole-y old t-shirt at Runyon Canyon.

Obviously, this is all very strange considering my whole life revolves around fashion at the time being. The disparity between the two has led me to this site called In Flow Style. I've discovered they have tons of trend forward and comfortable gear for girls on the go.  Their stuff is pretty decently priced and you actually look pulled together when working up a sweat which is also a huge motivator for a fashion forward girl like me.  When I wear this Nimble set I get so many compliments and I usually end up in it all day running errands. Shockingly it's possible to still look pulled together  even though I'm in comfy running clothes. This is a new concept for me that I've very excited about.

District La Brea x The Style Sauce

Over the past 10 years I've seen SO many changes happen to L.A. One of the biggest ones is the La Brea shopping district. In the past 5 years or so they've taken a once desolate street populated with random Persian rug shops and the occasional antiques store and made it into a serious shopping and dining destination. Some of my favorite shops and eateries can now be found in this area of Hollywood which is amazing! Going to District La Brea and shooting this post was such a fun day because it was actually just taking you along a normal day I would have in Hollywood.

My outfit of the day was slightly Parisian with a rocker twist. I found this Chanel vintage boutique worker's shirt at a thrift shop. The skirt I'm wearing is from ShopWantList which is an online boutique that features only black, white, and grey gradient clothes. I was really drawn to this skirt because of the graphic stripes and the tassles on the bottom of it that move with me while I walk. They have a bunch of great stuff at a really affordable price point so definitely check their shop out here. My jacket is by Cameo the label, bag vintage Coach, and shoes Dolce Vita (last season but I'll put similar ones in the shop gallery).

Our first stop was for lunch at The Sycamore Kitchen, which has incredible food. I don't often talk about eats on here but it's a big deal for me. I'm a HUGE foodie and this spot definitely has my stamp of approval. Being a coffee addict, it's also a big plus that they stock Stumptown cold brew (my favorite- try the nitro tap if you ever get a chance). For lunch I had the Mediterranean salad which has blue cheese, dates, hazelnuts, and kale. SO GOOD you guys. Brian, who shot the lovely pictures for this post, decided on The Fried Egg Tartine which was also incredible. Fried eggs, arugula, pesto, and avocado are things I will NEVER turn down. We washed it down with some Stumptown coffee and were amped for the day's shopping adventures.

My first stop for shopping landed us at Garrett Leight. To be honest I had never tried on his sunglasses before this day and I was blown away how all of the frames fit my face so well. Being the son of the creator of Oliver People's (one of my other favorite sunglass lines), he has good sunglass genes you could say. I love that all the frames have a throw back vintage feel and it's a Venice Beach brand (like me!)

For clothes and other accessories I headed for Steven Alan which really nails the whole minimalism chic meets luxe materials thing. Mansur Gavriel is one of my favorite handbag lines, and they frequently procure their coveted purse collection as well as carry other modern designers like Building Block. While I was there I tried on their own label's Dunham Motorcycle jacket and simultaneously fell in love with it. It's the kind of boyish jacket that I love to wear over a silk dress or with jeans when I'm feeling more cool girl.

We ended the day at A+R Design, which is the kind of store I always wind up in. I used to frequent their location on Abbot Kinney, but now they're just focused on La Brea. Working briefly in interior design, home decor is something that I take seriously. This place has one of the best collections of European designers and stuff you just don't usually find on the beaten path. Some favorites include their Edward Wohl bird's eye maple cutting boards (I bought one), these copper bar stools (that I really want for my kitchen), and this clock I've been coveting since I saw it 3 years ago whilst eating dinnner at Capo in Santa Monica. That's just the tip of the ice berg. They really have some cool stuff in this store.
