Have you ever read the book "Steal Like an Artist" ? If not, I'd highly recommend it. It seems to be a book I always go back to when I'm having a creative block and need some serious inspiration. The premise is basically this: whatever you admire in other artists take a portion of, and make it your own in a unique way. Don't be confused: this does NOT mean go steal other people's work, but to more find aspects of inspiration in other people you think are killing it, and reinterpret it. In general, it's really helped me to become a (somewhat) successful blogger to follow some bloggers and other creatives that I think have bomb-ass content. I also take style cues from old movies, musicians, artists, all around bad asses, and obviously other stylists' work as well.

The reason this ties into today's post is that I also do this on Instagram. I follow a lot of accounts that provide me with some sort of inspiration that has made my own content better. Some of these accounts have a lot of followers, and some of them do not, but the common denominator is that they're all inspirational to me in some way.

Check out below my Top 10 L.A. Based Instagrams below for all the best food, travel tips, street style, and inspiration currently coming out of The City of Angels.

This café is known for L.A.'s favorite customizable lattes, and continues to grow in popularity. This place will write or design whatever you like on your cappuccino, and has beautiful natural light and white tables. As expected, it's every bloggers dream. My girl Corey over at Miss Foodie Problems never ceases to make me SO hungry. She eats at some seriously amazing spots, and a lot of them are off the beaten path. Not to mention, she's also an awesome cook and regularly features her creations on Snapchat.  Check her out at @missfoodproblems.

Infatuation LA:

While Infatuation has accounts all over the U.S., their LA account is clearly my favorite. They also feature other users' great content for an authentic round-up of some seriously great eateries. Follow them @infatuation_la

Levi Sawyer:

This awesomely talented menswear stylist/ human that I'm also honored to have as a friend creates some of the coolest fashion grams around. His style is colorful and original. He's a savvy vintage hunter, as well as a stylist for Farfetch, so he gets to play with lots of designer labels. Check him out at @tribecalledlevi

Brittany Xavier:

The creator of Thrifts and Threads has become quite famous but I've actually been following her since she had 20,000 followers and was in the running to win Bloglovin's "Breakthrough Blogger of the Year" award. Brittany won the award and never looked back, but I love her Instagram for it's multitudes of casual, but chic outfit ideas. Sure, it isn't the IG that has the most insanely beautiful photos and heavily photoshopped feed, but it's not trying to be. What Brittany has accomplished is an approachable blog that incorporates fashion and blogging tips with her every day Los Angeles life while looking chic doing it. Follow her @thriftsandthreads

Skatie Swimwear:

I recently found out about Skatie's line from fellow bloggers, and really fell in love with their suits and the fact that they're made from recycled fabric, which is SO important to me. Check them out for a very California vintage vibe with eco-friendly flair. @skatie_official

Discover LA is an all inclusive publication that is a great place to find events happening, news, and basically anything LA related. They also have tons of beautiful shots on their Instagram! Caroline Juen:

The blogger behind Love and Loathing LA tells her Los Angeles story of food, fashion, and fun in a super down to earth and authentic way that I'm a HUGE fan of. She'll make you laugh in her IG stories and never takes herself too seriously which is refreshing in the world of IG narcissism. Her photos are also beautiful and really well articulated. To top it off, she always has the inside scoop on fun things to do in The City of Angels. Check her out at @loveandloathingLA

Whitney Leigh Morris:

While I don't know Whitney, we have been neighbors for quite some time over here on the Venice Canals. I love her point of view chronicling her life in a tiny canal cottage with her ever growing family. Her living space is beautiful and it's a useful account to follow for design ideas if you also have a small living area to work with. She has a really clean and pretty design aesthetic and you can find lots of tips on her blog. Check her out at @whitneyleighmorris

I Love LA: A lunch at Bottlefish Brentwood

Well, it's  safe to say there are a few things I love more than brunch, and that's really, really, good brunch. When I got invited to go into Bottlefish, a new restaurant in Brentwood, I have to admit I wasn't expecting to have one of the best lunches in history. I scheduled myself to go in on a Sunday, because what else do you do on Sunday other than eat? Obviously, nothing!

When we arrived, we had no idea what to expect. Tucked upstairs inside a little boutique shopping area in Brentwood, the restaurant is hardly visible from the street. They had inexpensive valet downstairs, and then we took a quick escalator up to the second level which is where the entrance to the restaurant lies.

Let me stop right now and say: this place is fucking incredible. Sorry, but the F word needs to be used here. I'm a HUGE seafood fan and not one thing we ordered failed to impress. Brian, my lunch date, was actually MAD at me for (I quote) "making him eat so much". Err ok, like I feel really bad for you, not.

The lunch menu at Bottlefish is pretty extensive, and it's a seafood lover's dream. That being said, let's get back to the food: To start, we noshed on spicy caesar salad with bibb lettuce, which was the best caesar salad I've EVER had and I do NOT say that lightly. We also had smoked trout dip (amazing), and a raw scallop special dish that came with WARM BROWNED BUTTER, sea salt, chives, and lemon zest. I'm sorry but scallops and butter, do I need to say more?

For the main courses we opted for the snapper fish tacos and the lobster roll. The fish tacos came with an entire fish filet, two different salsas, pickled onions, and beans. I ordered the corn as a side which went with them perfectly as well. Brian's dish was a lobster roll which the server offered to us hot or cold. The obvious choice for us was warm, although the server said it's frequently requested chilled. Regardless, I was lucky enough to try a bite of the lobster, which was nothing short of juicy and succulent. Brian is from New Jersey and used to eating Maine lobster in the summers, and he definitely gave the lobster roll a stamp of approval.

I have to give a shout out to the kitchen staff and chef for being so accommodating. I've never talked about this before on here, but I'm pretty severely allergic to gluten, and not by choice. They willingly brought me sliced cucumbers with the trout dip and omitted the croutons from our caesar. Their service was nothing but A+.

There is also a full bar and extensive cocktail menu. I would recommend their take on a dark and stormy any day! The spicy margarita was also very good.

Thank you, Bottlefish for the incredible meal and I can't wait to come back! If you're reading this, you should 100% go for lunch or dinner asap. They're also starting a regular weekend brunch shortly which is sure to impress.

xx, Genevieve

An L.A. Original: Umami Burger
HD2A8600.jpg

Umami Burger is definitely one of those places that you have to visit anytime you're in Los Angeles - It's a quintessential institution that always hits the spot when you're in need of a favorite American food. While they've branched out to various places in the U.S., it's a burger that was born in L.A. which is why I had to check it out for myself. For this meal I asked 3 friends to join me at their location in Hollywood to try their 9-course tasting menu.

The tasting menu is certainly not a small feat and it is not recommended for the faint of heart. I left feeling as though I had taken gluttony to a totally unchartered territory of gluttony levels. On a scale from 1-10 of full we left at like a 17 1/2. Our entire party had to take frequent breaks to try to get through all of these burgers. The server informed us we were the first actual table he's seen finish the entire tasting. This obviously made us all genuinely proud.

Highlights of our dinner included: "The Manly Burger"- cheddar cheese, bacon lardons, onion strings, and Umami's special house ketchup, "The Greenbird Burger" (best turkey burger I've ever had)- green cheese, smashed avocado, sprouts, green goddess dressing, butter lettuce, and a "Maple Bacon Old Fashioned" which was just how I like my whiskey cocktails- nice and strong!

Umami's signature burger the "Truffle Burger" . Highly recommended for all my fellow truffle lovers.

Back to what I'm good at, talking about clothes ;). When eating a 9 course burger meal, what does one wear? Well... I opted for all black. I mean, this sort of meal is not for a lacy white dress or anything "dry clean only" if you know what I mean! I'm wearing here high waisted black pants, a For Love and Lemons Knitz body suit, Sam Edelman booties, and my favorite tan Topshop duster jacket. There's something about black and tan as a combo that has been calling me lately, and I've been wearing these colors together more and more. Check out the photos below and let me know what you think!
